Abstract
276,379. Budd Wheel Co., (Assignees of Board, E.). June 3, 1925, [Convention date]. Feeding articles from hoppers and shoots.-A rivet feeding mechanism comprises a transporting device adapted to pick up a rivet at one point and to release it at another point, such release being effected only when an unoccupied hole is available for the rivet being fed; an oscillating uprighting device is also adapted to take rivets from a box and to cause them to slide in upright position to the transporting device. The rivets contained in a box 146 are lifted therefrom by the, uprighter 153 and slide down a trough 147 to the position 160, where they are picked up one by one by fingers 178 on the. oscillating transporting arm 168 and carried to the point 188, Fig. 13, where they are inserted in the work. The uprighter 153 oscillates about an axis 154 and as it moves upwardly through the mass of rivets in the box its trough-shaped upper edge picks up a number of rivets; those rivets in upright position pass through apertures in coacting gate members, whilst the rivets not in upright position are swept back into the box on the downward movement of the member 153. The oscillating transporting device comprises an arm 168 adjustably clamped to a shaft 164 by a split collar 169. The fingers 178 are pivoted at 183, Fig 7. to a wrist member 179 passing through a vertical aperture 180 in the front part of the arm 168; a spring 182 acting against a collar 184 holds the fingers closed whilst a spring 177 normally holds down a joint member 175 connected to the forearm 174 of the wrist member 179. The shaft 164 is oscillated and reciprocated by means of two cams 203, 202, Fig. 10, the former reciprocating the shaft through the lever 206 and the latter oscillating it by means of the lever 214 and link 216. The fingers 178 are opened to pick up a rivet at the position 160 by the engagement of the finger tips 186 with the inclined sides 162 of the end of the trough 147, this end of the trough being steadied by a support 163, Fig. 8; release of the rivet at the rivet inserting position is effected by the engagment of the finger tips with the work by reason of the lateral displacement of the finger tips with relation to their pivots 183, a pin 187 carried by the wrist member 179 pressing the rivet into position. If there is no hole to receive the rivet or if the hole is already occupied by a rivet the stem of the rivet held by the fingers keeps the finger tips clear of the work and the rivet is not released; in this case the joint member 175 breaks upwardly against the action of spring 177, and when the rivet transporting device is again brought down at the rivet taking position the rivet already held in the fingers prevents their contact with the finger opening inclines 162. The arm 168 of the transporting device may be angularly adjusted by set screws 173 on a forked shoulder 170 secured to the top of the shaft 164, the set screws engaging opposite sides of the arm 168. The angle of oscillation of the shaft 164 may be varied by means of a collar 227 on the shaft carrying a depending lug 226 adapted to engage set screws 225 in radial ears on an extension 223 of the oscillating pedestal 166.
