Abstract

477,250. Making electric incandescent lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 7, 1937, No. 13108. Convention date, May 8, 1936. [Class 39 (ii)] In a transferring-mechanism for carrying electric lamps or the like from sealing-in to exhausting-heads which are indexed in and out of position in front of the transferring- mechanism, the lamp 10 which rests on a bulb holder 11 of the sealing-in machine is gripped in a carrier 21, which engages the bulbous portion of the lamp, and is lifted and carried to a second position where it is engaged by grippers and positioned so that its exhausting- tube 14 is properly positioned relatively to the exhausting-head 98, whereupon the lamp is moved downwardly to insert the exhaust tube into the head for the bulb to be exhausted. As shown, the bulb holder 11 of the sealing-in machine forms one of a series mounted on a turret 15 which is indexed around adjacent to the transferring-mechanism. The carrier 21 of the latter is of the suction-operating type in the form of an inverted cup containing an asbestos washer shaped to seat upon the end of the bulb. When the bulb is gripped in the suction cup, the hollow carrier tube 20 is lifted by the vertical movement of a rod 34 which is connected to it by an arm 33, the rod 34 being actuated by a lever 39 connected by a vertical rod 38 to a cam-operated lever below the machine table 44. The tube 20 is next swung around to the position shown, by means of a swinging-arm 61 which engages a rod 49 extending upwardly from the arm 33, the arm 61 being secured to the lower end of a sleeve 60 coaxial with the rod 34 and connected by links 59, 58 to an oscillating arm 57 at the upper end of a tube 56. At the end of its swing the lamp 10 is received in a gripper comprising a pair of lower jaws 62 which grip the neck 64 of the lamp, and upper jaws 66 which engage the bulbous portion 68. The lower jaws are attached to the upper jaws, which are in turn attached to levers 71, these latter being drawn towards one another by a spring connected between them. The levers 71 are each mounted on a pin on a vertically movable slider 74 which is adapted to be raised and lowered on the column 47 by a link 102 connecting it to a cam-operated lever, so that the lamp is carried downwardly until its exhausting-tube 14 is inserted within the exhausting-head 98. The transferring-jaws are then opened and raised to their former position, the opening being effected by a cam which is mounted on a rotary shaft 79 and engages between the pair of jaw-carrying levers 71. Specification 232,953, [Class 39 (ii)], is referred to.
