Abstract

674,494. Endless conveyers; suction devices for lifting articles. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. June 30, 1950. [June 30, 1949] No. 16453/50. Classes 78 (i) and 78 (iv). [Also in Group XI] A sealing machine, provided with centrally apertured heads to receive lamp mounts upon which a glass envelope or lamp tube is subsequently sealed while in the machine, is provided with mechanism for feeding mounts in succession to the heads and comprising a carrier which positions a mount directly above a sealing- head and then lowers it into the seating position, the leading-in wires and parts of the mount below the skirt being guided into the aperture of the head by a splib funnel-guide, comprising at least two sections, which is swung into a position between the mount carrier and receiving head and is provided with means for separating at least two of tile sections of the funnel to permit the guide to be retracted free from the mount. As shown in Fig. 2, the mounts 7 are brought along by an endless conveyer 12 comprising a chain 13 driven in synchronism with the indexing movement of a rotary turret sealing machine), the mounts having been loaded manually into holders 19 on the conveyer. At a pick-up position 20 of the conveyer a mount is picked up by an inverted suction cup 26, Fig. 10, at the outer end of a swinging carrierarm 21 and carried to a position in axial alignment with a sealing-head 2 of conventional form on the turret The carrier-arm 21 is hollow and is secured upon a hollow vertical shaft 23 which swings to-and-fro about its axis and is connected at its lower end to a vacuum pump. The swinging movement is imparted to the shaft 23 and arm 21 by a pinion 39. Fig. 3, which is splined on the lower end of the shaft and engaged by a reciprocating rack 38 driven by a pivoted link 37 the stroke of which is adjustable through a pin-and-slot connection with a disc 35 oil a rotary shaft 34. Vertical movement of shaft 23, simultaneous with the rotary movement, is effected by a rotary cam 13 engaging an arm 42 mounted on at pivot on the side of a box 25 which bouses the mechanism. the arm 42 being bifurcated to straddle the shaft 23 and engage a collar 42x secured thereon. The cam shaft 44 is driven from shaft 34 by a gear train 46, and operates at the same speed. A valve 28 in the pipe-line between the suction cup 26 and the vacuum pump is operated by a solenoid controlled by switches provided with operating arms arranged to be actuated by an arm projecting laterally from the shaft 23. Fig. 10 shows the carrier arm 21 towered to position a mount on a head 2 of the sealing machine, the conical guide being interposed between the flare 8 of the nrount and the centrally apertured burner 3 of the head, whereby the leading-in wires 11 are guided into the aperture 4. The conical guide is made in two parts 50, Fig. 5, with flat end portions secured by pivot pins 53 un the outer end of a channelled arm 55, an actuating arm 54 extending through the channel being formed with two slots 64 to receive pins 65 upstanding from the guide sections 50. Arm 54 is secured positively to the upper end of a. shaft 52 so that an initial clockwise movement acts to close the jaws 50 about their pivots before the channelled arm 55 is moved, this latter arm being provided with a depending sleeve portion 56, Fig. 6 (not shown) which is free upon the shaft 52 and engaged by a spring- pressed detent which acts temporarily to hold it against immediate movement with arm 54. Similarly when retracting movement of the arm is initiated, the jaws 50 are opened before movement of the arms takes place.
