Abstract

913,321. Sewing-machines. ROCHESTER BUTTON CO. May 5, 1961, No. 16420/61. Class 112. In a sewing-machine havng buttonholding jaws, apparatus for loading buttons into the jaws comprises a swingable transfer arm, means on the arm for holding a button, and means for swinging the arm about a vertical axis from a button-receiving position to insert the button into the jaws from the rear thereof. Buttons B (Fig. 3), are delivered in a column on a flat surface on which a button slide 45 reciprocates to successively push a single button over a hole 66 in the plate, the button then falling on to locating pins 71 (see Fig. 1) at the end of a transfer arm 70 which swings about a vertical axis to carry the button into the button-holding jaws of the sewing-machine from the back thereof. The locating pins 71 are adapted to enter the holes in the button, and if the holes are not properly orientated with the pins as the button drops through the hole 66 the button will rest on the top of the pins until turned by engagement with the rubbertipped head 115 of a rotating spindle 105, until the holes and pins are in alignment. The slide 45 is reciprocated by a connecting rod 44 and a crank 40 which is drivingly connected to a shaft 20 at selected times by a solenoid controlled one-revolution clutch. The rotating spindle is driven by a belt 112 from the shaft 20 and is journalled in a sleeve 108 axially movable in a housing 114 and biased downwardly by a spring 124 or, optionally, by gravity. The head of the spindle is lifted out of the way, before another button is fed into the hole, by a forked lifter 120 mounted on the slide 45 and having inclined surfaces 121 which engage ears 122 on the sleeve 108 to raise the latter as the slide advances. The transfer arm 70 is mounted on a shaft 75 which is mounted in a pedestal 78 for oscillation and reciprocation therein. A slide 84 has at one end a follower 83 engaging a cam path 82 in the cam 81, the other end having rack teeth engaging a pinion on the shaft 75 to oscillate the latter. The cam 81 has a second cam track 92 which cooperates with a follower 91 disposed at one end of a first order lever 87 the other, bifurcated, end of which engages the shaft between collars 88, 93 to lower the shaft 75 and the transfer arm after the motion of the slide 84 has swung the arm from under the hole 66 to the buttonholding jaws of the sewing-machine. The cam 81 is rotated at selected times by connection to driving means through a solenoid controlled one-revolution clutch.
