Abstract

Chasers; taps.-In a screw-cutting tool the apex of one or more of the teeth is modified so as to cut a thread larger than the standard at the roots in order to allow for wear on the tool. In a tap for cutting United States' standard screwthreads, the apex of a tooth is extended as at 20, Fig. 4, the extension being at a more acute angle than the tooth itself and thus providing an amount of material which may be worn away to the dotted line 21 before the correct tooth profile is affected. In modifications, the sides of the extension may be substantially parallel as at 25 and may be carried to a point below the line x-x representing the outside diameter of the thread being cut, or alternatively the extension may lie wholly outside the normal thread, as shown in Fig. 5. The pitch diameter of the tap is also made slightly more than normal to allow for wear on the flanks of the teeth.
