Abstract

276,198. Mason, H. G. Nov. 12, 1926. Smoke-producing weapons.-Apparatus for producing smoke without sparks or heat effects such as would involve fire risks, comprises a container for the smoke-producing materials provided with vent holes which are covered with heat insulating material permeable to smoke. The invention is shown applied to a smoke bomb adapted to be dropped from an aircraft. The bomb comprises an inner steel canister 16, containing the smoke producing materials, an outer casing 10, and intermediate packing 13, 14, of asbestos. The inner canister has vent holes 17, 18, 19 at or near the top and bottom and the outer casing has vent holes 15 around the middle. The smokeproducing materials are packed in felt 23 and may be chloro-sulphonic acid, or a mixture of this acid and sulphuric trioxide, contained in a sealed glass receptacle 24, and quicklime packed in layers 21, 26 near the bottom and top of the canister. The glass receptacle is adapted to be broken by a detonator 30 fired by a cap 31 and time fuse 38. The vent holes of the inner and outer receptacles are sealed by an easily rupturable diaphragm such as waxed paper.
