Abstract

Condensers.-A resilient plate is caused, by relative movement between its supports and an abutment, to form an arc between itself and the lateral edges of the abutment before first contact is made with the dielectric separating it from an opposing plate. The two resilient metal plates c, e are bowed outwardly and separated by insulating balls or cylinders d taking in suitable apertures in the plates. Rotation of the screw g causes the plates first to straighten, then to make line contact with the dielectric i, and finally to abut the dielectric over the whole area of the abutments b, f in the maximum capacity position. A three plate condenser can be made by inserting an extra dielectric sheet i and metal plate j between the plates c, e, which plates may be integrally formed. The plate j is carried on pins k extending through the balls d. In Fig. 7, the plates c, e are disposed at right angles so that a point contact with the dielectric is obtained first, but the axes of the plates may be at any angle desired to provide varying characteristics. Fig. 10 shows a form wherein the plates are curved unsymmetrically and a floating ring o serves as a support for the balls d. The first contact will be along two lines and the plates may be angularly arranged as in Fig. 7 to vary the characteristics. In another form, the lower plate c is fixed, being constituted by the base of the casing.
