Abstract

Condensers. - In a variable condenser, the plates of opposite polarity are so arranged that they may be caused to move towards or away from each other in a direction substantially at right angles to their planes by a parallel motion device. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the fixed plates a are arranged to form a casing within which are arranged a pair of moving plates c pivotally mounted at opposite ends of a pair of links q pivoting on spindles r. The links q are connected by springs u, and the upwardly bent end of the lower plate c is provided with an insulating block t against which the plates c may be forced towards the plates a in opposition to the springs to vary the capacity, contact between the two sets of plates being prevented by sheets of mica d serving as dielectric. The screw f operates in a sleeve h which is in screwed engagement with the panel g and a fixed member m upon which is provided a scale co-operating with the operating knob l which is secured to the head of the screw f by a screw n. A terminal v is provided on the fixed plate a whilst connection to the plates c may be obtained through the spindles r. Alternatively, the plates a may be insulated from each other and arranged to form a dual condenser for tuning two circuits simultaneously. In a modification, a single fixed plate is arranged to co-operate with a single moving plate, the plates being made of V-shape to increase the area. In a further form, Fig. 6, the pivoted links are replaced by inclined planes x provided on the bottom of the casing and a single moving plate c is carried on spindles y, the ends of which engage in slots z formed in the side walls of the casing. The distance between the plates a, c is varied by the screw f which acts in opposition to springs u tending to draw the swindles y towards the upper ends of the slots z. The single screw f may be replaced by a compound screw, or, alternatively, a cam may be employed for displacing the moving plates.
