Retractive switches; switches, quick-action; contacts.-A pedal-operated switch has an actuating lever 4 pivoted in a bracket 1 and connected by a pin and slot connection to a switch arm 5 pivoted in a bracket 2 and carrying at its free ends 6 contacts 7 joined by a member 28 so that they bridge fixed contacts 11 when the switch is closed. Tension springs 10 are connected between the members 4, 5 in such a manner that the switch is opened and closed with a quick action and that when in the closed position (Fig. 2) on removing pressure from the operating pedal the switch is automatically moved to its inoperative position as shown in Fig. 1. The contacts 7 are adjustably mounted in their holders, being carried by stems 24 sliding through insulating sockets 23 and pressed downwardly by springs 25. Their relative movement under the action of these springs is limited by nuts 26 which are adjusted so that the contacts in opening remain in engagement until the lost-motion between members 4, 5 has been taken up and the springs 10 have crossed their dead-centre position.
