Abstract

274,446. Stokes & Smith Co., (Assignees of Davis, S. H.). July 13, 1926, [Convention date]. Affixing by adhesives. - Wrappers, labels, &c., after being coated with adhesive, are held flat on a feed belt by suction applied to the uncoated wrapper face, the feed belt, porous to air, moving over, or constituting, a wall of a suction chamber. Stacked wrappers 3 are fed, one by one, to a glue-applying roll 8, which adhesively coats the upper face of each wrapper. Stripping plates 8<b> pass the wrapper on to a porous belt 9 which moves over a hollow casing 20 wherein suction is maintained by a fan 23. The perforated top 24 of the casing 20 is entirely covered by the belt 9, and the length of suction chamber opening may be limited by an adjustable shutter 25 over the forward end of the casing 20. A modified construction comprises an extension suction chamber, pivoted to the main suction chamber, and formed with a pointed end adjacent the point of sheet delivery from the gumming roll. when the frame carrying the upper feed rolls and the gumming roll is thrown back for access to the rolls, a roller on the frame engages and rotates the pivoted extension chamber to break the auxiliary suction connection.
