A continuously moving web of paper is coated with a thick hot gum in a predetermined pattern so that the web may be subsequently cut and formed into envelopes, packets, bags or letter cards, the web being heated prior to the gumming operation by passage over a heated rotary cylinder, and immediately after passing the gumming device the web is passed over a heated curved and smooth table. A paper web 1, Fig. 1, taken from a reel 2 passes a heated cylinder 3 and has the desired pattern of gum applied to it as it passes around a roller 16. The gumming device comprises a pick-up roller 20, an adjustably mounted transfer roller 14, and an applicator 4 having a concentric cylindrical plate 13 which applies the gum to the pattern. After being coated the web is passed over a heated curved and smooth table 5 exposed to the open air and through a drying chamber 6 equipped with drying lamps 9. The openings 7 and 8 in chamber 6 for the web serve as air intakes to allow air to be drawn through the chamber by a fan 11. After passing over a roller 19 the web may be reeled or passed on to a machine for cutting and folding into the finished article. Prior to being gummed the web may be printed, e.g. by including printing apparatus between guide rolls 17 and 18. In a modified gumming apparatus, Figs. 2 and 3, gum is flowed on to a roller 20 from a valve 23 supplied from a reservoir 21, the gum being heated as it passes through a duct 22 by a heating jacket 25. Excess glun is scraped off the sides of roller 20 by knives 37, 38 and is collected in a drainer 33 from which it may be recovered in a tank 36 and preheated prior to being returned to the reservoir 21. A valve 40 may be included in the duct 22 for taking test samples of the gum. The applicator roller 31 is provided with two applying plates 13a and 13b.
