Absorbents; separators. - Storage batteries are filled with silica gel which absorbs the electrolyte and separates and supports the electrodes. The electrodes may be spaced apart during the process of filling the battery with the gel by means of a comb-shaped member j. In order to prevent the gel from falling out through the vent V the latter may be covered with a screen v. The silica gel may be made according to the process described in Specification 136,543, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.], and it may be heated before being introduced into the battery so that its moisture content is from 5 to 10 per cent of its weight.
