272,203. Ducart, G. June 4, 1926, [Convention date]. Packeting by wrapping-up. - Relates to mechanism for folding wrappers over the ends of cylindrical boxes, tins, &c. The wrapper 25, Fig. 1, is applied to the box 24 so as to form a tubular covering extending at each end, and the whole is placed on a platform 27 so that the upper edge of the box is level with folding blades 13. Carriages 8 for the blades 13 move in radial slots 4 in a table 1 and are moved radially by the engagement, of pins 9 in cam slots 7 in a plate 5 adapted to be rotated by a handle 6. Each blade 13, Fig. 5, is mounted on a shaft 12 rotatable in the carriage 8 and is adapted to be turned through a right angle at the appropriate moments by the engagement of a pin 14 with a slot 18 - - 21, Figs. 1 and 9, in a plate 17. In use, after the box and wrapper have been placed in the position shown in Fig. 1, but with the upper edge of the wrapper still projecting upwards, and with the carriages 8 and blades 13 retracted to their outer positions, the handle 6 is turned so as to cause the carriages to move inwards. During the inward movement, the pins 11 engage the straight. portions 19 of the grooves and the blades therefore occupy vertical planes and form a number of pleats. Towards the end of the movement, the pins ride up the portions 21 and turn the blades down flat turning all the pleats dl - - d<7> into the positions shown in Fig. 15, the. blades momentarily lying between the folds so formed. The handle 6 is now moved in the reverse direction to retract the carriages 8. The pins 14 engage the upper straight portions 18 of the grooves and the blades therefore disengage themselves radially from the folds with a smoothing action, being turned again into a vertical position towards the end of the stroke by the action of the portions 20 of the grooves.
