Abstract

271,731. Br³ckner, G. Nov. 3, 1926. Mercury switches. - " Left " and " Right " indicators for vehicles, which are raised into position by energization of an electromagnet g or h., are adapted to be automatically returned to their original positions in consequence of the steering wheel movement operating a tiltable mercury switch. As shown in Fig. 1 the rearwardly inclined steering wheel a carries two tubes b, c containing mercury. Rotation of the wheel a in one direction or the other causes the mercury in one of the tubes b, c to bridge contacts in a circuit to a coil d or e which thereupon attracts a latch i or k and allows the corresponding indicator to fall. In a modification, Fig. 4, the tubes b, c take the form of figure eights. In this case the circuit to the coil d or e is only completed as the steering wheel a is being returned into its straight ahead " position. In further modifications, the tubes b, c are joined so as to form one tube, and the arrangement may also be such that the movement of the wheel a causes a circuit to be broken instead of to be made. The tubes b, c may be mounted on a carrier rotated by means of a chain &c. from the steering wheel, and may also be mounted in one unit with the switches for operating the magnets g, h.
