Abstract

411,696. Road-traffic signals. MILLER, R. S., Rose Villas, Oldham Road, Ashton-under-Lyne. July 8, 1933, No. 19426. [Class 118 (ii).] An arrow is rotated to indicate a proposed turn by means of an electromagnet, the electromagnet raising the arrow which is turned during its upward motion by means of a screw. Two forms of arrow are described, one of which is illuminated by a fixed lamp and the other carries a lamp. As shown in Fig. 1 when the magnet g is energized, the casing a to which arm b is attached, is raised into the position indicated in the Figure, the casing being turned by the screw arrangement t, w (see Fig. 3). The lamp q is lit to illuminate the arm b and the tail fin c through red lenses p. The arm b carries a fluted conical glass element b<2> and a coloured strip e of preferably red celluloid. When the magnet is de-energized the arrow is restored to its normal position by spring m. Two further lenses p of green glass show towards the front and the rear. An alternative construction of arrow is shown in Fig. 5 in which the arm carries a lamp q, the current being fed to the lamp over the arms y. The operating mechanism is identical to that shown in Fig. 1. Two indicators are provided for right and left hand indications respectively. The indicator can also be used for indicating allowable turns to road traffic and for directing traffic in parking places.
