Liquids, separating; valves, arrangement of.- An enclosed compressor for refrigerating machines comprises a cylinder containing the piston, an intermediate chamber through which the rod passes, and a third chamber containing guides for the crosshead and separated from the intermediate chamber by a plate, with means for transferring any oil in the intermediate chamber to the crank case, upon whch the structure is mounted. The chambers and cylinders may be formed integral or connected. The intermediate chamber II, Fig. 1, receives gas from the evaporator and delivers it through the hollow valved piston to the compressor cylinder. The piston valves may be held in place by bolts q which may be loosened on removing the cover plate o of the chamber II. A plate i is provided at the base of the chamber and may be fitted with a stuffing box k and holes n which relieve the pressure in the crank case. Any accumulation of oil above the plate may be removed through passages t, u controlled by a valve s, the oil passing into grooves m in the crosshead guides. In a modification, the plate j is integral with the chambers. Fig. 3 shows the chamber II formed as a hollow dished plate v slipped over the piston rod and held against the bottom of the cylinder by a set screw w; the orifice in the plate through which the piston passes is large enough to allow drainage of oil.
