Vacuum tubes.-A photo-electric cell has as its active element an alloy of a metal of the alkali group and a metal of the alkaline earth group having a melting point higher than that of the alkali metal. An alloy consisting of 90 to 95 per cent of potassium and 10 to 5 per cent of barium has a melting point of 100‹ C. The metals are purified by repeated distillation, and are chilled to the temperature of liquid air, and mixed while cold in a vessel which is exhausted, and subsequently heated to 400‹ C. to form the alloy.
