Dobbies; jacquards.-Relates to means for driving dobbies and jacquards by power or by hand as required. The shaft 1, Fig. 2, carrying cams 2 for driving the knives of the dobby has a bevel wheel 4 in mesh with a wheel 5 loose on a shaft 6, Fig. 1, driven from the upper or lower shaft of the loom. During normal working of the loom, the wheel 5 is coupled to the shaft 6 by a clutch device comprising a clutch member 26 fast on the shaft and in permanent engagement with a, sliding clutch element 25 having one or more clutch claws 28, which are held in engagement with corresponding claws on the wheel 5 by a spring 27. The clutch element 25 is connected by a fork 24 to a bell-crank lever 22 pivoted at 23 and engaged by a lever 19 geared to an arm 17, Fig. 2, connected to a bent rod 14 engaging a sleeve slidable on a shaft 9. The sleeve carries a spring-controlled lever 13 carrying a pin 12 for engagement in one of two grooves 11 in the shaft 9, and a wheel 8 capable of gearing with a wheel 7 on the cam shaft 1. When it is desired to operate the dobby by hand, for example for finding a broken pick, the lever 13 is depressed and the sleeve is moved to the left by a crank 10, thereby allowing the pin 12 to move into the left hand groove 11 and causing the wheels 7, 8 to mesh, the rod 14 through the mechanism described causing the clutch element 25 to be moved out of engagement with the wheel 5. The dobby can then be operated by rotating the crank 10. To cause the dobby to be' again driven by power, the parts are moved 'again into the position shown, the claw parts 28 preventing that from being done until the shaft 1 is in the same position relative to the driving shaft 6 that it occupied before the dobby was operated by the crank 10. The correct position may be found by operating the lever 10 backwards or forwards until the' claws. 28 come into engagement by the action of the spring 27, the sleeve then being free to move on the shaft 9 to the right, as shown.
