Abstract
271,076. Lundberg, C. G. A. May 11, 1926, [Convention date]. Fibrous plastic compositions. - The waste of cotton or wool manufacture or roved wool or cotton is treated with a zinc salt and an acid, and is then impregnated with rubber solution, moulded and vulcanized. Fillers such as wood pulp may be added. According to an example, cotton or wool is treated with dilute sulphuric acid, washed and dried. The material is steeped for 30 min. in a solution consisting of 78 parts of zinc chloride, 14 parts of zinc sulphate, and 8 parts of nitric acid, at a temperature of 80‹ C. After drying and separating, the material is impregnated with a solution of waste rubber in linseed oil to which has been added melted Syrian asphalt, pitch, colophony or the like. The mass is moulded under pressure and heat, and is then exposed to sulphur vapour for vulcanizing. Up to 50 per cent of pulp may be added. The material is suitable for the manufacture of gear wheels, building elements &c.
