Ornamenting. - Relates to the coating and colouring of objects of iron or ferrous metals, such as tiles, covering-sheets, fittings, gutters, pipes, &c. The objects are first cleaned, and then exposed to the action of gas produced by the dry distillation of coal. whereby surface oxidation is removed and a protective film of carbon is deposited. The objects are then dipped in a bath of pitch, resin, tar, &c., to form a rust-protecting coating. The coated objects are then placed in contact with heated colouring material, which consists of powdered mineral substances, such as granite, porphyry, gneiss, marble, waste bricks or tiles, or natural sand, and pressure is applied. The colouring substance may be applied by projecting it upon the objects.
