Abstract

270,240. Cerny, K. April 30, 1926, [Convention date]. Ornithopters; planes, construction of; propel. ling; steering and balancing.-The flapping wings of flying machines are mounted by horizontal and vertical joints and are driven in such a way that the wings move forwards during the up stroke and backwards during the down stroke. The wings are also turned up and down by air pressure about the axes of the main spars of the wings. As shown in Fig. 3, the wings are connected to a central fixed plane T and are formed of overlapping spring leaves 57, 57a which open and shut fanwise during the forward and backward movements, and also open as valves during the up stroke. The main spar 56, Fig. 1, of each wing is jointed to the frame 6 by a vertical joint B and a horizontal joint A. The wing is driven by cables S\ S<11> operated by a rotating crank 12. The cables are doubled at the wing end, one part effecting the vertical movement and the other the horizontal movement. The double cables pass over pulleys 31 - - 34 resiliently mounted on fixed bracket arms 30. The pulleys are carried by slides 41, Figs. 4 and 5, which are pushed outwards by air cylinders 47. Air is forced into the cylinder 47 by a pump 51 operated by the wing, and the pressure is regulated by a spring flap valve 66 the pressure of which can be adjusted by a second spring 71 adapted to be drawn across it by a cord Sill operated by the pilot. By this means the outward pressure on the pulleys and consequently the amplitude of movement of the wings is regulated.
