Yarns and threads; processes.-In the preparation of uniform or even textile woven and knitted fabrics of extreme thinness and lightness, a sliver of animal fibre, such as botanv or cross-bred wool, or mohair, alpaca, or the like, and one or more slivers of artificial silk or other vegetable substance, the fibres or filaments of which are approximately of the same length as that of the animal fibre used, are taken together through all the subsequent processes of preparing. combing, gilling &c. to produce a thread. The. actual mixing or combining may be effected at any stage of the process before combing or subsequently, and a roving of animal fibre may be combined with one or more rovings of vegetable fibre and two drawn out simultaneously prior to twisting. The slivers may be combined in any proportion By using the different fibres of the same length or staple, a uniform fine thread is obtained by drawing out. This thread is woven or knitted into a fabric which is subjected to a process by which the vegetable matter is taken away, leaving a very fine even fabric of animal fibre. A fabric having softness of handling, cover, and maximum lustre may be produced by the known process in which the compound thread obtained as described is twisted with an extra vegetable thread having opposite twist, so that in the final product the compound thread becomes untwisted to any pre-arranged extent.
