Types; holders for loose types. - Type elements for use in a chase having slotted type-supporting bars comprise a body portion 12, Fig. 1, of ordinary printers' type material, and a cap 13 of harder material which encloses the upper end of the type and provides shoulders 15 adapted to rest on the top of type-supporting bars 4, Fig. 4, between which the lines of type are composed in a chase 1. The cap 13 is substantially U-shaped and is provided with a socket 14, Fig. 3, which may be dovetailed to engage the top of the type 12. Before securing the type in the cap 13 its top end is cut away by an amount equal to the thickness of the bridge 17 of the cap, in order to ensure that the element remains of the standard length of the type. The chase 1, Fig. 4, is provided at one edge with a rib 6 to engage an inturned lip 7 on a printing head 5, a rib 8 along the opposite edge of the chase being adapted to engage a spring-controlled latch 9 pivoted upon the printing-head.
