Abstract
269,129. Niles-Bement-Pond Co., (Assignees of Cole, L. C.). April 8, 1926, [Convention date]. Combined turning and boring machines; turning crank-pins ; boring- bar machines.-A machine for trueing up the crank-pins of locomotive driving-wheel sets comprises a pair of headstocks 11 mounted on a base 10 and provided with tool-rotating and feeding-means and a further pair of supplementary headstocks 12 having centres for engaging the work and guides for guiding a rotary tool-head. The spindles 13 carrying the work centres are axially adjustable by means of rods 13a engaging nuts 13<b> on the spindles and rotated through bevel gearing from hand wheels 13d and 13e. Auxiliary supports 14 arranged between the wheels W are provided with adjustable vees 15 to engage the axle and clamps which secure the wheels to the supports. Tool-bars 17 are mounted on slidable saddles 18 adjustable on inclined guides by screws 19 which are rotated from a ratchet wrench 20 through bevel gearing. Each tool-bar is driver from an electromotor 25 through a change-speed gearbox 28, oblique shaft 29, telescopic shaft 31, and worm gearing 32. The gears are changed by means of a handle 30. A spur gear 37 splined to the tool-bar is adapted to drive through worm gearing 40, change-speed gearing 41, and bevel gearing 46 a longitudinal shaft 48 which is threaded to engage the pedestal 50 in which the rear of the tool-bar is supported between collars 32. Thus the rotation of the bar is accompanied by simultaneous forward feed of the bar along the saddle 18. Manual adjustment of the toolbar may be effected from a hand-wheel 53 on a cross-shaft bevel geared to the shaft 48. In order to advance or withdraw the bar rapidly the shaft 48 may be driven directly from the gearbox 28. The two tool-bars are arranged at an angular distance of 90‹ with respect to the wheels W. The headstocks 11 are adjustable along the base for different lengths of axle by means of fixed screws 67 working in nuts 68 which may be driven from the gear boxes 28 through inclined shafts 71. Upon one side of each auxiliary headstock is an adjustable guide member 76 which may be secured to its saddle 18 and be movable therewith. Slidably mounted on the guide 76 is a tool-head 78 carrying a hollow cutter-head mounted on the tool-bar 17 which is rotated and fed forward in the manner above described. In order to adjust the guide 76 simultaneously with the saddle 18, a nut 80 on the guide member is engaged by a screw 81 driven by a shaft 84 forming an extension of shaft which is turned by the ratchet wrench 20. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the subject-matter of Specification 277,033. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
