498,894. Shaping. SHELDON & SONS. Ltd., A., and VINNELL, F. H. July 15, 1937, No. 19637. (Class 83 (iii)] A machine for shaping longitudinal surfaces of a cylindrical article carried in bearings, such as the bars of a beater roll for paper making, comprises a bed 1, Fig. 2, adapted to be applied to the cylindrical article whilst in position in the bearings, a carriage 2 reciprocable along the bed and arranged to carry a tool 18 with two cutting-edges, and means automatically to present the appropriate cutting-edge to the work at each reversal of the carriage. A plate 6 carried by the saddle is adapted to be tilted to adjust the position of an adjustable slide 11 mounted on the plate 6 and carrying a vertically adjustable slide 14 for the tool holder. The latter is rotatable and connected by links with universal joints to a lever 19 which is suspended on the side of the machine away from the work and is adapted to be swung from one side to the other at the stroke ends by adjustable stops 27. The stops are mounted on a slidable bar 25 which actuates the belt-shifting gear for reversing the drive to the feed-screw 3 ; the bar may also be moved by a hand wheel 30 to reverse the saddle at any position intermediate the stops 27. Cross beams 31 fastened to the bed 1 carry bolts 32 which are tightened to grip the sides of the work to take the cutting thrust.
