Rails, metallic built-up, comprise outer members 1, 4 provided with projections or flanges forming the head and base of the rail and inner members 2, 3 formed by substantially flat bars. The inner members may be enlarged at the top or bottom, or both top and bottom, or may have projecting ribs or grooves. The joints are all stepped, and the upper surfaces of the two members of a joint are depressed at their ends to reduce shock.
