267,535. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. March 10, 1926, [Convention date]. Grant of Patent opposed. Alcohols.-A mixture of carbon dioxide and hydrogen, suitable for the synthesis of methyl alcohol and the like, is prepared by treating gaseous or vapourized hydrocarbons, e.g. methane, ethane, ethylene or benzene, at temperatures of 300‹-600‹ C. with steam in the presence of catalysts consisting of iron, nickel, cobalt, or compounds thereof, activated by the addition of chromium, vanadium, or compounds of the alkali, alkaline earth or earth metals. According to the example, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon dioxide is prepared by passing methane and steam over a heated catalyst prepared by adding potassium carbonate solution to a solution of nickel, aluminium and magnesium nitrates, mixing the washed precipitate with a little potassium nitrate solution, drying, and reducing with hydrogen. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes the activating agents as metals whose oxides are reducible with difficulty, or compounds thereof. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
