Abstract
266,010. Branchu, P. J. Feb. 15, 1926, [Convention date]. Switches, electromagnetic. - The quick action characteristics of the circuit-breaking device described in Specification 250,570 (in which a light contact-member is moved rapidly by the reaction of the current therein with a fixed magnetic field) are improved by employing a second quick-acting switch which, when the first switch is moved to the off position, serves to hold it there. The main circuit to be controlled is from the fixed contact 6 to movable contact-arm 2 and through the magnetizing windings of the core structure a which, in the form shown, is common to the two switches. When, with excess current, the contact-arm 2 breaks the main circuit, it still remains in engagement with an auxiliary long contact 7 with which the second contact-arm 8 engages the circuit is now through the resistance 11, arm 8, contact 7, arm 2 and the magnetizing windings. This reduced current serves to move the arm 8 in the clockwise direction and the lost motion in the slotted link 14 connecting together the two contact-arms is taken up. The second contact-arm therefore serves, to reinforce the off position of the main contact-arm when the reduced current is operative. A resistance may be connected in shunt with the contact-arm 2 whereby the action is expedited in the event of rapidly-increasing currents and at the same time an improved blow-out effect is obtained.
