Abstract
265,663. Miller, H. C., and Sumner, G. P. Oct. 30, 1925. Odometers.-An odometer or revolution counter is operated by a rocking arm mounted on a fixed pivot and actuated by a cam. Fig. 1 shows the application to a hub odometer in which the counting mechanism A is mounted on a stationary plate 7 and is surrounded by a rotary casing 1 adapted to be secured to the hub of a vehicle wheel. The spindle 12 of the plate 7 is coupled to the fixed axle of the vehicle by a device B as described in Specification 265,528, and access of oil and dirt to the counting mechanism is prevented by an arrangement of parts as described in Specification 265,527. A disc 4 screwed into the rotary casing 1 carries a cam 15 which engages a roller 18 on an arm mounted on a fixed pivot 17. A second arm 16<a>, Fig. 3, on the pivot 17 carries a pawl 16<b> which actuates the ratchet wheel 23 of the counter train A. The cam 15 is preferably formed as a groove, the cam surfaces being detachable. By changing the segments, the range of the instrument may be varied. The retaining pawl 20 is mounted on an adjustable eccentric boss 21 as described in Specification 265,526, in order that the ratchet wheel 23 may be changed to accommodate different sized road wheels without changing the pawl. Specifications 232,692 and 258,714 are referred to. A modification is described in which the outer casing 1 is stationary and the spindle 12 is caused to rotate and carries the actuating cam.
