Abstract

264,666. English Electric Co., Ltd., and Blandford, A. R. Feb. 3, 1926. Automatic circuit-breakers; electromagnetic switches.-An automatic device responsive to the direction of the current, of the kind in which an armature is influenced by two sources of magnetization, one of constant and the other of variable direction, comprises an E-shaped core 1 - - 4 and a U-shaped core 5, so arranged that the limb 1 is contiguous with one limb of the core 5 and the limb 2 is spaced away from the other limb so as to allow an armature 6 to move between them. The armature is pivoted on a non-magnetic pin 7 with clearance between it and the core 4 and is adjustable by a nut 10. A coil 11 on the bar 4 exerts a constant magnetizing effect on the E-shaped core, whereas a coil or bar 12 exerts a varying effect on the coil 5. With one direction of current the core 5 is arranged to be magnetized so that unlike poles are produced in the limb 1 and adjacent part of core 5, so that the flux circuit is through the parts 5, 1, 3, 4, 6 and the right-hand end of the armature 6 moves over to the core 5. If. however, the current reverses, the polarity will be, the same and the left-hand end of the armature will be attracted to the core 5. The position of the armature is adjustable by means of a screw 22, or by a plate 20 and screw 21. The armature may be arranged to operate the device to be operated by means of a pin 13 thereon engaging a lever 14 on a shaft 15, the latter carrying a lever 16 operating through a link 17 and lever 18 a rock shaft 19. By means of a slot 23 in the link 17 the device may be operated by hand independently of the armature.
