Abstract
264,601. Potter, H. V., Crump, J. W., and Damard Lacquer Co., Ltd. Oct. 23,1925. Urea-aldehyde-phenol condensation products.- The intermediate products prepared by the condensation of ureas, aldehydes and phenols as described in Specification 256,711 are hardened by the addition of strong acids or acidic salts. Acids mentioned are sulphuric, nitric, hydrochloric, phosphoric and oxalic acids; and as salts, aniline hydrochloride, urea nitrate, ammonium chloride, phenylhydrazine hydrcchloride and ammonium sulphocyanide are referred to. The hardening is normally effected in the cold, though heat may also be applied. The rate of hardening depends upon the proportion of phenol to urea used in the preparation of the original syrup, whether an accelerator was employed and if so its type, the nature of the hardening agent and the amount employed. Examples are given of the influence of these factors upon the hardening nf syrups prepared from phenol, urea and formaldehyde. In all cases the hardening agent, which may be employed in quantities of up to 5 per cent of the reacting materials, is stirred into the syrup; at first the latter becomes hard and solid but is still fusible and soluble; finally it becomes infusible and insoluble, though it is slowly disintegrated by alkalies and strong acids.
