Abstract
263,947. Stephens, D. G. Oct. 8, 1925. Hydraulic transmission apparatus.-A system for the hydraulic transmission of power, as applied to a. motor vehicle, comprises a pump, two motors driving the road wheels, a pressure tank for starting the car engine, a replenishing tank for the transmission system, and an arrangement of control, distributing and relief valves in the connecting pipe system. To start the car engine a, the pressure tank 4 is connected through valves 5, 9 to the oil pump 3 mounted on the shaft of the engine a, the outflow from the pump returning to the pressure tank through the pipe 3<a>, control valve 1, valve 8, and oil reservoir 6. With the engine started and driving the pump, the pressure tank is first replenished and then for normal running the valve 1 is closed and the oil passes through a reversing valve 2 and pipe 10<a> to the motors 10 driving the road wheels. The return flow passes through the pipe 10<b> to the valve 2 and through the pipe 3<b> to the. pump. Safety valves 7, 11 and 12 are provided in the pipe system. In a modification an additional pump and control valves are provided so that the road wheel motors are each driven by one of the pumps.
