Abstract

484,919. Hydraulic transmission of power. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., BOUGHTON, E. B., and HIGGS, C. W. Nov. 11, 1936, No. 30800. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] Comprises hydraulic steering- gear wherein the steering hand wheel or the like is connected to the steerable road wheels by a plurality of independent hydraulic systems, so that if one system fails the other or others continue to form an operative connection between the steering wheel and the road wheels. In the construction shown, a pump unit B comprising two separate gear pumps 42, 46 is driven by the steering shaft 35, and the pumps are connected by separate pipe-lines 29, 31 and 30, 32 to two independent cylinders 17, 18 of a motor unit A which operates a steering lever 15 connected by divided track rods 14 to the stub axles of the steering wheels. The pump unit is secured by screws 49 to a bracket 48, and the motor unit is pivoted at 23 to a bracket 24 on the front axle 10. Each system comprising a pump, pipe-line and motor cylinder is independent of the other so that if one breaks down, the other is not affected. The systems are kept full of liquid by means of a single reservoir 50 having a spring- loaded piston 57 and connected by restricted bores 53, 54 and pipes 55, 56 to the gear pumps 42, 46. Should one of the systems fail by leakage, the piston 57 descends and closes the bores 53, 54 so that the two systems are isolated, and the one that does not leak remains operative. A light spring 62 keeps a cup washer 63 against the piston 57.
