Abstract

Repairs, facilitating. - A method of grinding lift valves to their seats in situ consists in feeding an abrasive mixture to an intermediate portion of the contacting surfaces while the valve is in the closed position, and then rotating the movable member against the seat. The Figure shows a discharge valve for a tank car adapted to carry the method into effect. The valve member 27 is guided by a spider 43 and is loosely connected to a spindle 15 actuated against the action of a spring 24 by a hand actuated cam 18 engaging a bracket 19 secured to the dome 16 of the tank. The lower end of the spindle is slotted to engage a rib 26 on the bottom of the hollow valve member and is threaded to a gland 32 screwed to a flange 29 on the valve member. Packing 34 arranged between the gland and a collar 35 on the spindle is compressed by rotating the gland which is afterwards secured by a detachable pin 35 engaging one of the ribs 38 formed on the back of the valve member. Abrasive mixture is introduced into the hollow spindle and is forced into the hollow valve member and thence through holes 40 onto the contacting surfaces by means of a plunger adapted to be screwed into the outer end of the spindle. In a modification using a solid valve the mixture is introduced through an aperture in the seat and the valve member has a peripheral groove to ensure even distribution. A hand wheel 23 is secured to the spindle for rotating the valve on its seat.
