Abstract

262,657. Brunner, M. May 31, 1926. Oil supply.-In a heavy oil burning installation for the furnace of a heating system an electrically driven air pump 3 is used first for filling the oil tank 4 from a main reservoir F and subsequently for forcing the air by pneumatic pressure to the burner or burners E and supplying oil for mixing with and atomizing the oil or its discharge from the burner or burners. The air pump 3 has its inlet and exhaust valves 5, 6 connected by a loop tube 7 fitted with cocks 8, 9 and a closable air tube 10. The cock 9 is connected by a pipe 9<1> to a flue pipe 16 leading from a distributor chamber L to the outer atmosphere. The distributor L communicates with the supply tank 4 and is connected by a pipe 12 fitted with a valve 25 to the burner E. The lower part of the flue 16 comprises two branches, one 14 being fitted with a decompression cock 17 and the other with a safety valve 18. A pipe 11 leads from between the cocks 8, 9 on the tube 7 to the distributor L. The tank 4 communicates with the reservoir F through a valve-controlled pipe K, a flexible connection H and an adjustable dip pipe G having a filter J fitted at its lower end. A pipe 20 leads from below the fuel level in the tank 4 to a purifier 21 and a pipe 24 fitted with a cock 26 leads from the purifier to the burner E. The lower part of the purifier 21 is of glass and is fitted with a cock 23 for drawing off impurities. A manometer 13 is fitted on the distributor L. When the furnace is to be heated the tank 4 is first filled from the reservoir F by the suction caused by operating the air pump 3 to withdraw air from the tank 4 and discharge it into the flue pipe 16. For this operation the burner cocks 30<1>, 31<1> and the air inlet 10 are closed, the cocks 8, I are opened, and the twoway cock 9 turned so that the air discharged from the pump is led into the pipe 9<1>. When the tank is full the burner cocks 30<1>, 31<1> are opened, the cocks 8, I are closed, and the cock 9 turned so that the air discharged from the pump passes through the pipe 11 to the distributor L and then to the tank 4 and to the burner E. Spray burners.-The burner E shown in Fig. 4, comprises a tubular body 32, supported by a bracket 28 so as to project through the furnace door, and a forked head 29, the branches of which are connected through needle-valves 30<1>, 31<1> to the oil and air delivery pipes 12, 24, Fig. 1. A hollow spherical nozzle 35 provided with one or more discharge orifices 36 is adjustably secured in the delivery end of the body 32 by a nut 39. The oil passes through a tube 34 centrally arranged in the body 32 and the air through the annular space around the tube 34 to the spherical nozzle in which it is whirled before discharge by a mixer 37 having a cylindrical or spherical inner surface formed with helical grooves 38. The orifice or orifices 36 may be round, flat, or elliptical in section. The admission of additional air is regulated by an adjustable deflector 41.
