Application filed October 29, 1923. Serial No. 671,555.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY EME'I'IE SIM- MONS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hemlock, county of Howard, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Oil Burner and Vaporizer Construction; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to a combined vaporizer nozzle and preheater for oil furnaces and the like. It is old in the art to utilize heavy hydrocarbon oil, such as crude oil for fuel in furnaces, and it is likewise old in the art to supply air thereto .for combustion purposes through a unitary nozzle. It is furthermore broadly old in the art to supply steam to the mixture for increasing the combustion efficiency.
The chief object of the invention consists in the construction of a combined vaporizer nozzle of the character hereinafter more particularly described which performs the desirable functions previously indicated.
The chief feature of the invention consists in the provision of a tubular combustion channel about which are coiled the pro-heating coils.
Furthermore another feature of the invention consists in the unitary nozzle construction with which is associated the means for supplying the combustible mixture thereto and the means for cleaning the same when desired.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying ,drawings and the following description. and claims:
In the drawings, Fig. '1 is a perspective view of a furnace construction with the invention incorporated therein. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the combustion tube construction, the nozzle and associated parts, and the pre-heating means associated with both, parts being shown 1n section to show other parts in detail, and parts being broken away to show the same and other parts in greater detail. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the invention shown in Fig. 2.
In the drawings 10 indicates asuitable furnace construction which is provided with a combustion and pre-heating block 11 substantially rectangular in shape and pro vided with a flared tubular opening or passage 12 frusto-conical in shape. The block 11 is preferably of fire resistant material, and formed therein or otherwise suitably secured therein is a plurality of coils which are helical in formation and concentric with each other and the passage 12. The inner and preferably smaller diametered coil 13 constitutes the fuel pre-heating coil and is provided with the short supply line 14 and the longer return line 15. The return line 15 is connected to the rear end of the coil, thereby bringing the oil from the hottest part of the coil. The outer and larger diametered coil 16 is concentric with the smaller coil and also concentric with the tapered passage, and is provided with an intake or supply line 17 and a longer return line 18 which is connected to the coil at the rear end thereof so asto take the heated fluid from the hottest part of the pre-heating coil. As shown by the arrows in Fig. 2,. the fluids travel in said coils in reverse directions.
The line or conduit 20, including a controlling valve 21, discharges into a strainer housing 22 containing suitable straining means and a sump. The sump therein discharges through the pipe 23 controlled by the valve 24 into a drain 25. The housing 22 is provided with a strained fuel discharge conduit 26 which is connected to a multiple-way valve 27, which in turn is connected by the conduit 28 to the fuel intake pipe 14 through a T connection 29. A riser 30 from said T connection is connected to a valve 31 which in turn is connected to a tank 32 having a filling opening closed by understood by those skilled in the art;
Herein the T 35 and valve 27 are connected by a union .37 and suitable piping 38.
As shown clearly in Fig. 3 the air and steam discharge conduit 18 and the fuel discharge line 15 from the pre-heatin coils 16 and 13 respectively are connecte to a. nozzle construction indicated generally by the numeral 10. The nozzle 40 has a conical chamber or mouth 41, and positioned within said mouth is a valve-controlled nozzle 42 which is connected to the fuel supply line 15. An arcuate wall 43 is also included in the nozzle 40, and the air and steam, or both, which is supplied to said nozzle rushes through the restricted orifice after passing through the nozzle and impinges upon said curved wall. The needle valve 44 is positioned Within the inner nozzle 42 and extends through said nozzle and the nozzle 41, and upon its free end carries a hand wheel 45 for adjustment. Also connected to the nozzle 40 is a discharge or drain line 46 controlled by a valve 47 discharging through i the drain 4:8.
The operation of the device is as follows: The fuel is supplied through the line 20 to the fuel pre-heating coil 13 after being clarified. Air or steam, or both, is supplied to the pre-heating coil 16 by the connections previously described. By regulating valves 21 and 36, the proportion of fuel-to air, or steam, or both can be adjusted. Likewise, if desired, a portion of the air or steam may be passed directly into the conduit 28 with out passing through the air or steam, or both preheating coils 16. Since it is customary to supply the air or steam, or both, under pressure, the same causes a suction on the nozzle 42 and serves to draw the fuel through the pre-heating coil 13 and also serves to atomize or vaporize said fuel and intimately mix said vapor with the air or steam, or both. Ignition of this combustible mixture forms the flame in the frustoconical combustion passage 12, which flame serves to heat the coils positioned in or secured to the combustion and pre-heating block 11. After the furnace has been operated for some time, the various parts become foul or clogged, and the same must be cleaned. To permit of such cleaning, the flame is discontinued, the'valve 31 operated, and the acid supplied to the construction. This acid cleans the several parts and removes the fouling material from the fuel heating coil 13 and the nozzle, and this material is drained from the nozzle through the valve 47.
The invention claimed is:
1. A vaporizing nozzle construction for oilfurnaces including a fuel supply line, an air or steam supply line, a nozzle, a connection between said fuel supply line and said nozzle, another connection between said nozzle and said. air or steam supply line, a valve controlled cleaning fluid supply connected to said fuel connection, and a valvecontrolled by-pass between said fuel connection and said air or steam connection.
2. A vaporizing nozzle construction for oil furnaces including a fuel supply line, an air or steam supply line, a nozzle, a connection between said fuel supply line and said nozzle, another connection between said nozzle and said air or steam supply line, a valve controlled cleaning fluid supply connected to said fuel connection, a valve controlled by-pass between said fuel connection and said air or steam connection, and a fuel straining construction interposed in said fuel connection.
