Abstract
262,489. Sihorshy, I. I. Aug. 11, 1925. Planes, arrangement of; steering.-Aircraft having engines and propellers on opposite sides of the centre line are provided with fixed or movable surfaces in the slip streams from the propellers, each surface being so inclined or shaped, or both as normally to counteract the moment of the thrust of the corresponding propeller or. the machine, thereby compensating for any asymmetrical thrust. Fig. 1 shows two rudders 15, 16 arranged in the slip streams from the propelling units 9, 10, each rudder having its convex portion towards the fuselage, and also inclined, to give a lateral thrust towards the tail of the machine. For steering purposes, the rudders are connected together by a cord 18 and are operated by two pedals 21, 22. Instead of the rudders 15, 16 inclined symmetrical surfaces, or cambered surfaces set parallel to the line of flight may be used, or, as shown in Fig. 6, rudders 30 may be mounted behind fixed inclined surfaces 31. Fig. 7 shows another modification in which fixed surfaces 34, both cambered and inclined, are used to com pensate for asymmetrical thrust, a separate rudder 35 being provided for steering. Such surfaces may be provided also where propellers are disposed above and below the centre line.
