Abstract

262,431. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Woodrow, H. R.). Dec. 1, 1925, [Convention date]. Switching systems; systems depending on the use of static transformers.-High voltage mains 1 are connected to a low voltage network 4 by parallel feeders 7 including circuit breakers 5, transformers 3 and automatic circuit breakers 6. Each feeder 7 is associated with a relay 9 for tripping the breaker 6 on the occurrence of reverse energy flow in the feeder from the network 4 due to either a fault or to the magnetizing current for the transformer 3 being drawn from the network due to the breaker 5 being opened. The relay 9 has a voltage coil 10, and a current coil 11 connected across an easily saturated inductance 8, so that the coil can be made sensitive to a small magnetizing current and yet not be damaged by a heavy fault current. When the breaker 5 is reclosed, the coil 11 serves to ascertain when there is equality of voltage and phase on opposite sides of the breaker 6 and thereupon to energize the closing coil 17 of the breaker. When the breaker is open an impedance 16 is in series with the coil 11, but when closed the major part of this impedance is shorted.
