Abstract
262,427. Boerlage, G. D. Dec. 2, 1925, [Convention date]. Thermometers. -The temperatures of the various parts of a power plant, e.g. the bearings and cylinders, are indicated at a distance by the variation of pressure of air contained in vessels associated with the parts concerned and connected by tubes to liquid pressure gauges contained in a common casing. In the example described a four cylinder internal combustion engine has each bearing and cylinder provided with small air chamber 11 connected by pipes 22 to gauges contained in a casing 12. The air chambers may be separate from the bearings or cylinders or may be recesses in the same fitted with a cover to which the pipe 22 is connected. When separate, the air chamber consists of a tube 19 with a flattened portion by which it is connected to the bearing or cylinder at one end, the pipe 22 being secured at the other end, the tube 19 being insulated and fitted with a bright metal covering 24. In Fig. 1, the indicator 16 connected to one cylinder is lower than the corresponding ones connected to the other cylinder showing that this particular cylinder is defective in operation. Similarly the indicator 17 shows that the corresponding bearing is overheated and the indicator 18, which is low, shows that the bearing corresponding to the defectively working cylinder is not so heavily loaded as the other bearings. One form of air chamber consists of a jacket cast round the compression cock of the cylinder. The casing 12 may be constructed as shown in Fig. 7, the pipes 22 being carried in from the back and the open ends arranged in bell-glasses 41, the casing being filled with liquid, e.g. glycerine. A thin layer of coloured oil 46 serves as an indicator. The pipes 22 are of small bore or may be of rubber tube containing a number of wires to reduce the bore cross-sectibn and to prevent collapse of the tube.
