Abstract

262,233. Brooks, A. A. Oct. 31, 1925. Addition to 251,867. Locking nuts.-In a lock-nut in which an inner split conical member is retained in the tapered hole of the outer member by stepping the tapered surfaces, the inner member is first formed in the manner shown in Fig. 8, then placed in the outer member and finally expanded by a drift to form the stepped conical surface. Afterwards the screw-thread is formed in the member d. A key m is formed by making saw-cuts and pressing out the intermediate portion which engages a key-way k in the member a. In a modification, tongues f, Fig. 1, are bent over to engage slots g in the member a. In a further modification projections h, Fig. 5, engage one longitudinal slot j and two spiral slots j<1> in the outer member. Carborundum or other abrasive is placed between the conical surfaces to increase the binding action between the members.
