Abstract

Mineral and tar oils; lubricants for machinery. -Mineral lubricating and transformer oils are kept from sludging or polymerizing by adding small quantities of aldehydes, their polymers, or their condensation products with ammonia or organic amines, alone or mixed. In an example 0.1 per cent of trioxymethylene is added to a motor lubricating oil. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the darkening and polymerizing of and the formation of sludge in oils such as lubricants or transformer oils exposed at raised temperatures to air is reduced by addition of organic substances " capable of entering into molecular compounds or actuating secondary valencies," e.g. aldehydes and their condensation products, bases, nitriles, oxamides, acids and their derivatives, or mixtures thereof. In examples, 1 per cent of urea and 5 per cent of hexamethylene tetramine are added respectively to a high pressure compressor oil and a refined coal tar oil. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
