FRITZ HOFMANN, OF BRESLAU, AND MANFRED DUNKEL, OF MANNHEIM, GERMANY,
ASSIGNORS TO I. G. FARCBENINDUSTRIE AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT, OF FRANKFURT- ON-THE-MAIN, GERMANY, A CORPORATION OF GERMANY PRESERVATION or OILS No Drawing. Application filed June 14, 1928, Serial No. 285,499, and in Germany November 24, 1925.
The present invention relates to the preservation of oils against oxidation.
We have found that oils, especially lubricating and transformer oils, and in particular hydrocarbon oils can be preserved from the obnoxious action of atmospheric oxygen at elevated temperatures and the discoloration of the oils and the formation of asphalt-like sludge prevented by the addition of small amounts of nan-gaseous nitriles which are soluble in the said oils.
The said nitriles may also be employed in admixture with other organic substances such as bases, aldehydes and their condensation products, acid amides and their derivatives and the like.
The following examples serve to illustrate our invention which, however, is not limited thereto. by
weight.
The percentages are Eazample 1 On addition to a mineral oil, which on oxidation yields 0.45 per cent of tarry matter, of 0.1 per cent of aoetonitrile only 0.04- per cent of tarry matter are obtained by a similar treatment.
Example our hands. I
FRITZ HOFMANN. MANFRED DUNKEL.
