Abstract

An air brick with a housing that has a floor surface 14 and a parallel top surface 16 which are spaced apart by side walls 18. One end of the housing is open 20, and the other end 22 is covered by a grilled front face. The floor surface has at least one hole or aperture 24 for drainage, positioned near to the front face. The housing may be rectangular, and the floor surface may have an aperture or bore near the opposing corners. Both ends of the housing may be open, with one end being covered by a grille or a grilled flange and the apertures may be located through the floor surface next to the flange. A ducting assembly is also claimed, with a duct having an adapter which forms a recessed frame in which the air brick is positioned.

Description

AIR BRICK
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to an air brick. More especially the invention relates to an air brick with drainage capability.
Background to the Invention
An air brick is a brick structure that contains holes/grills to allow the circulation of 'fresh' outside air beneath suspended floors and within cavity walls to prevent moisture building up as a result of cold or damp air 'sitting' in voids or empty spaces. Air bricks are also used to provide a ventilation inlet/outlet for ductwork attached to mechanical ventilation units.
The applicant is a leading manufacturer and supplier of fire rated air bricks and ducting kits. The ducting kits include an air brick which fits into a plenum adapter secured to an end of the ducting.
Whilst the grills prevent water ingress into the air bricks in normal weather conditions, continuous impact of rainwater against the front grill of the air brick in bad weather conditions can result in water penetration through the grilled opening and into the air brick. Once inside the brick, the water may pass into the cavity or trickle down the duct and into the electronic equipment or other undesirable location, particularly if the ducting kit is incorrectly installed at the wrong angle.
The present invention seeks to overcome this problem by providing an air brick with feature to allow for immediate drainage of any water that may penetrate the grilled opening.
Statements of the Invention
According to one aspect of the invention, there is provided an air brick comprising a housing having a floor surface and top surface spaced parallel to the floor surface by side walls, one end of the housing being open, and the other end having, or being covered by, a grilled front face, wherein the floor surface has at least one aperture in a location proximal to the front face.
Preferably, the housing has a generally rectangular shape.
Preferably, the floor surface has an aperture in or near opposing corners.
Preferably, both ends of the housing are open, one end being covered by a grille or a grilled flange.
Preferably, the or each aperture is located through the floor surface adjacent the flange.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a ducting assembly comprising a duct having secured at one end an adapter, the adapter forming a recessed frame in which to receive an air brick of the first aspect, wherein the or each aperture is located at the end of the floor surface of the air brick so to extend beyond the adapter.
Brief description of drawings
At least one embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying figures, in which: Figure 1 shows a duct assembly with an air brick; Figure 2 shows a duct assembly with an air brick having a front flange; Figure 3A is a perspective view of an air brick constructed in accordance with the invention for use, for example, with a duct assembly shown in figure 1; Figure 3B is a front view of the air brick of figure 3A; Figure 3C is an underside view of the air brick; Figure 4A is a perspective view an air brick with flange assembly constructed in accordance with a second embodiment of the invention for use, for example, with a duct assembly shown in figure 2.
Figure 4B is a front view of the air brick of figure 4A; and Figure 4C is an underside view of the air brick.
Detailed description of the invention
Figures 1 and 2 show a typical ducting kit currently provided by the applicant. The ducting assembly comprises a duct 2 at end of which is secured a duct flange 4. Secured to the opposing end of the duct 2 is a duct adapter 6. The parts described are all made from fire-rated metal although they could be made from other suitable materials.
The duct adapter 6 provides a recessed frame to receive, in use, an air brick 8. The front of the air brick 8 is formed with grills (not shown), the number and orientation of the grill pattern can be specified or selected by the consumer. As can be seen in figure 1, the front of the air brick 8 extends beyond the end edge of the adapter 6 so that, when installed, the metal framework of the adapter 6 is not visible.
The ducting assembly of figure 2 is similar to that of figure 1, the difference being that the front of the air brick has a grilled flange section 10 secured across it.
The present invention relates to an improved air brick for use with the assemblies discussed above to provide drainage in the event that rain water is able to penetrate the grilled front of the assembly.
Figure 3 shows an air brick 12 of the present invention. The physical structure of the air brick 12 is unchanged, in that it comprises a generally rectangular open-ended housing, having a floor surface 14 and a top surface 16 connected by side walls 18. The air brick 12 is made from fire-rated metal, such as galvanised steel, but other suitable materials may be used.
The back end 20 of the housing is open in order to provide an air channel into the ducting to which the air brick 12 is connected when it is fitted into an air brick adapter a ducting assembly, such as for example, one shown in figure 1.
The front end 22 has a grilled surface (not shown) to allow air flow through the housing and into the cavity or duct assembly. The shape, orientation or number of grills is specified or selected depending on the consumer's requirements.
As can be best seen in figure 3(c) the floor surface 14 of the housing has a drainage slot or aperture 24 at or near each corner proximal to the front edge of the housing.
More than two apertures 24 may be provided along the front edge. Alternatively, a single elongate slot or aperture may be provided, provided the amount of material cut away does not weaken the structure.
The apertures 24 are located near to the front edge such that they are located beyond the wall of the adapter when the air brick is located in the assembly, allowing any rain water that may penetrate the front grills, to drain directly out of the air brick 12 so not to get trapped within, or flow further into the assembly. This would be particularly likely to happen if the ducting assembly is not correctly installed such that it extends through the cavity wall at a downward angle.
Figure 4 shows an alternative form of air brick assembly which includes front grilled flange 26 secured across the front opening. The drainage apertures 28 are provided at or along the front edge of the floor surface 30 adjacent the flange 26.
In the described embodiments, the ducting, adapter and air bricks all have a generally rectangular structure. They may be formed in other shapes, the duct and air brick assembly may for example be circular. In such a case a drainage aperture is provided at or near the front edge and the brick is installed so that the aperture is at the lowest point to ensure appropriate drainage.
