Liquids, treating with gases.-In columnar apparatus for treating liquids with gases, the quantity of liquid on each plate is made dependent on the viscosity and surface tension of the liquid, the plates in those regions where the liquid has a high viscosity and 'small surface tension being adapted to contain more liquid than plates in regions where the viscosity is less and the surface tension greater. In columns for rectifying liquid air, the plates in the upper portion where the liquids and gases are rich in nitrogen are arranged to contain more liquid than the plates in the lower portion, either by increasing the height of the overflow or the area of the plates in the upper portion. The area of the plates may increase uniformly or in tiers and the upper plate may contain three times as much liquid as the lower plate.
