Abstract

261,752. Urquhart, R. M. Nov. 17, 1925, [Convention date]. Fire-extinguishing by foam. - A method of generating foam consists in feeding by suction separately into a flowing stream of solvent dry powdered foam-generating chemicals which enter the stream at substantially the same point. In the apparatus shown, water from a pipe 14 passes through a flaring ejector passage 9 and so to the delivery tube 16. A hopper 1 screwed into a boss 6 on the ejector is divided by a longitudinal partition, not shown, into two chambers containing, for example, dry powdered aluminium sulphate, and sodium bicarbonate with licquorice extract respectively. The partition has an extension 2<1> towards the ejector passage. Reaction between the chemicals is slowly completed in the tube 16, and the nozzle 17 has baffles 18 to assist complete mixing. By turning the hopper so that the partition is transverse to the direction of flow of the solvent an acceleration of foam production is stated to be obtained. The inlets from the hopper chambers to the ejector are so proportioned that the chemicals are fed in the correct reacting proportions.
