Coilers.-In an arrangement for use with carding, drawing, combing and other preparing or spinning machines in which the filled cans are automatically replaced by empty cans and the sliver is prevented from rising above the edge of the can by automatically actuated rammers the plate 5, Fig. 1, carrying the cans 7, 7<1> is actuated through gearing 21, 22, 23 from a shaft 20, which derives its motion from a pulley 17 operated by a falling weight 18. The delivery roller 3 drives through worm gearing a wheel 14 having a plain section 15. The wheel 14 is normally in gear with a pinion 16 on the shaft of the pulley 17 and winds up the weight 18. When the plain section 15 comes round the pinion 16 is freed and the weight 18 falls rotating the pulley and the shaft 20. The plate 5 is thus turned through a half rotation. At the bottom of its fall the weight 18 depresses a rod 25 against the action of a spring and brings it into position to engage a stop 24 on the gear 21. The cans are given a reciprocating movement about their axes 47 by racks 42 engaging pinions 44 connected by gearing with the plate, 6, 6<1> on which the cans are placed. The racks are reciprocated by a doublethreaded screw driven from a central shaft 33, which is rotated by bevel gearing 31, 32 from a shaft 27 connected bv a chain 29 with the shaft 4 which drives the delivery roller 3. The rammers 53 are carried by arms 52 on a sleeve 51 which slides on a tube 49. Thev are counterbalanced by a weight 62 inside the tube and connected by cords 61 to the arms. The sleeve 51, Fig. 4, is slotted and carries a pawl 58 adapted to engage a rack 56 on the tube. 49. The tube 49 is reciprocated by a double threaded screw 48 on the shaft 33. When in their descent the rammers 53 encounter the resistance of the sliver in the cans the pawl 58 clips over one or two teeth on the rack 56. The pawl 58 can be released by hand to allow the initial setting of the sleeve 51.
