GROMMET FORMING MACHINE Filed April 1, 1949 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR. Maxi/WM WHO/6 'erly prepared for the forming of the grommet, there is provided a spindle ll mounted on a bracket 12 and adapted to be operated by a belt '13 connected with a large pulley wheel Is on the driving shaft I5. This spindle H has a transverse member 15 to which the rope material is connected and while retaining the free ends of the rope material in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1, the material will be twisted and preformed. The rotation of the spindle H is controlled by a foot lever I! pivoted on the shaft 58 and is connected by a chain T8 to a pivoted lever 19, Fig. 2, which will normally keep a clutch element 8! out of engagement with the pulley belt 13 due to the action of the spring 82. When the lever H is depressed, the action of the spring is overcome and a spring 83 on the spindle shaft "H will urge the clutch element 81 into engagement with the pulley.
Pivoted on the front of the table is a lever 85 which is connected to a chain 35. This chain 86 is connected to the foot lever l1 whereby as the foot lever I1 is depressed the lever 85 will be pivoted in a counter-clockwise direction as shown in Fig. 2 so as to elevate a rod El having a wheel 83 thereon. The rod 81, when released, will be returned to an adjustable stop 89. The wheel 88 can engage with the mandrel 3i and by connection with the roller 29 cause the mandrel to be withdrawn after it has been extended forwardly to form the grommet. The twisted strands of rope material can be placed upon the spindle in the manner as shown in Fig. 3, and as the operator steps on the foot lever ll, the mandrel will be drawn along with the rope material so as to cause the rope material to be passed between the rollers which will effect a twisting action upon the same and eventually form the grommet as shown in Fig. 7. Once the grommet has been formed, the operator will step upon the 4 flexibility to permit the easy formation of a grommet of rope material and that such a machine has a simple control arrangement whereby the hands can be made free while the various devices are operated by the feet. An electric switch 9| controls the electric motor [8.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of my invention, what is claimed is:'
lever 11 and cause the roller 88 to be elevated for l. A grommet forming machine comprising a table, ,a constantly driven shaft, operating rollers spaced one above the other and pulley belt means connecting said rollers with said shaft to effect the reverse operation of the rollers, a mandrel operable between the rollers, a member fixed to the table and having a square opening therein, said mandrel having a spiral extension thereon adapted upon engagement with the square opening in the member to cause the mandrel to be turned, guide rods on the opposite side of the mandrel, a slide connected to the mandrel and to the guide rods to slide over the guide rods, releasable means connected to the slide and to the constantly driven shaft for effecting the movement of the mandrel, said mandrel being rotatable in the slide and a lever arrangement connecting with the releasable means for controlling its operation.
2. A grommet forming machine as defined in claim 1 and a return device for the mandrel comprising a vertically adjustable member having a roller thereupon and adapted when elevated to engage with the mandrel to cause its a return movement and with one of the twisting rollers to be powered therefrom.
