Abstract
261,338. Felten & Guilleaume Carlswerk Akt.-Ges. Nov. 12, 1925, [Convention date]. Artificial lines.- In an artificial line for use in measuring cross - talh between two telephone lines, in accordance with principles described in Specification 189,165 and elsewhere, ohmic resistances only are employed, so that the measurements may be independent of frequency. The resistances are arranged to form a T, Fig. 1, or an H, Fig. 2, and a further resistance may be bridged across the left-hand (input) end of the line. The resistances W1, w, are adjusted so as to represent units and tenths, respectively, of the " damping," while the resistance W2 represents the impedance as measured from the right-hand (output) end. The input voltage Va (representing the disturbing transmitter .is related to the output voltage Vc(representing the disturbed receiver) approximately by the formula Va/Ve = W1/w. [1 + (W2 + W)/R] where W<1>, W2, wr are the resistances indicated in Fig. 1, R is the load resistance, and w is small compared with W1. On identifying this formula with one for a real line Va/Ve = ¢ e<b># (1 + Z/R), where Z represents the " wave resistance " and b the .. damping," it is found that Z # W2 and b = loge W1 + loge (2/w), w being neglected in the value of Z. Hence Z and b may be imitated by means of separate adjustments of W1 and W2 respectively. In the case of b, units of damping are represented by W1 and tenths by w.
