Disbinguishing artificial silks of different characteristics.-Threads of different denier numbers are distinguished by dyeing them wholly or in part during or after the spinning operation with a dye of characteristic colour, the dye being decolorized or removed during the bleaching process, or some other after-treatment. Dyeing of the threads is conveniently combined with the final washing operation, a dye such as methylene blue being added to the wash water. In the case of centrifuge spinning, the dye may be applied in an atomized condition in the centrifuge &c. The process is particularly applicable to the manufacture of viscose silk; but it may also be applied to cuprammonium and nitrocellulose silks. Specification 251,580 is referred to.
