Abstract
259,474. Phillips, A. E. April 1, 1926. Bookbinding.-In books, magazines, and the like, of the kind bound by means of staples or fasteners disposed at longitudinally spaced points in the binding edge, the superposed leaves a, Fig. 1, are cut or pierced by longitudinal slits d which confront and partly surround the fasteners c, thereby forming integral binding-stubs f and freeing the. leaves from the restraint of the clamping pressure of the binding fasteners, permitting them to open out flat on opposite sides of the binding when the book is opened, as shown in Fig. 3. The slits are preferably of compound formation, comprising an intermediate arcuate portion with arcuate ends curved in the opposite direction, or they may be of V or other formation confronting and partly surrounding the fasteners. The slits may be produced by cutting in a guillotine type of machine, or by perforating and subsequently tearing the leaves.
